Unfortunately, you are not in a good position. Shooting from the stands at
night is a difficult proposition; especially with the substandard lighting
that most high-school fields have (I'm assuming it's high school).
Have you gone to the field for a night practice with a camera or meter to
see how much light there is? That would be a good start to see how much
light you're getting. That would tell you how much lens speed and film
speed you'll need to apply to get the necessary 1/125 or 1/250 to halt the
action.
The 200/4 is only a 4x lens, so compare your 7x binoculars (they equal a
350mm). That will give you some sense of image size.
Film choices may drive you to 800 speed negative films.
As for shooting from the stands, I'd ask the coach or field manager for a
press pass. For high-school or small college games, you should be able to
swing one. A monopod on the sidelines is the way to go for real action, but
it's not easy. I did it for 5 years during college. For night games, I
usually used Tri-X pushed to 800 or 1600 with my OM 300/4.5 or 180/2.8.
Good luck, maybe someone else has more experience than me and can lend
additional advice.

Hello all,
I want to shoot my son playing sports, American football and baseball.
Both are in the evenings where lighting will not be my friend. I will
probably not be able to get down at field level so I will be shooting at
some distance from the stands. What lenses should I look for that would not
break a bank? I have a 200 f4 coming soon, would I be able to slip in my 2x
converter to get 400 f8? What would I be looking at for one of the big
boys, and which one would be the best bet? I hope to be able to get some
good shots, any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
