I also have the Polaris. It works well, doesn't have excessive
battery drain, and is rugged enough to withstand my abuse. I've
had it for at least three years now (yikes! time flys) and am on
my second battery. It's been banged around, dropped, sat upon
and played with by my little girls.
My only real gripe with the Polaris is that the case (fake
leatherette dohicky) really isn't designed to be usable as the
meter must be removed inorder to use it. The everready case
design of the Gossen Luna-Pro is far superior. Hence, when I'm
using it during a shoot, it's left naked and exposed to many
knocks against tripods and whatever else I come near.
The Polaris' Incident light dome does introduce a slight problem
though. Because of the sensor size and angle of view, the
accuracy of the incident meter varies slightly when the
point-source light is at an extreme angle to the dome. In my
testing it may get as far as a 1/2 stop off. No big deal
though. When the exposure is critical and the lighting is from
an angle, I will take two or more incident readings while
changing the position/angle of the meter and average the
results.
I recommend the Polaris as the price/performance ratio makes it
a good buy. The Minoltas are very good meters, but I personally
couldn't justify the price difference. They offer features like
averaging, ratios, etc., but when it comes down to basic
metering accuracy, the Polaris is every bit as good (and
actually was a bit more consistant when I did a head-to-head
comparison with several of Minolta's finest. I did cherry-pick
mine from a selection of meters.
