You pick up contrast in the print, so generally the lower the contrast
in the original, the better. I used to use the Dr. Beers formula as a
replacement for the developer. It gave me the ability to pick at least
three distinct contrast grades, albeit with a change in the speed of the
paper. I don't recall any color shifts.
