Dear Dan,
<< I see all these wonderful pictures of star trails and things
with people saying they are 30 minute, 50 minute exposures.. How do I keep
the
shutter open that long to take a picture like that? >>
I had an OM-10 way back - my first SLR with 50/1.8 and Sigma 80-200. I
couldn't quite stretch the funds to a Vivitar or Tamron in my youth.
I am trying to recall where the 'B setting is. Lookaing at my old OM-10
brochure I can see now ...
If you set the small switch inside the ASA dial to "B", you have it! When you
press the shutter release down it will open, and it wont close until you let
go of the shutter release.
"Very useful!" I hear you say ... but what you need is something to enable
you to do this without holding a finger on the shutter button for half and
hour!
You need a locking cable release to do this for you. You screw this into the
thread in the middle of the shutter release (best to do this before winding
onto the next frame). there is a small plunger at the other end which you
press and this pushes a cable down inside the shutter button which releases
the shutter. A locking cable release will also have a small mechanisn which
locks it in that position, and you can then walk away for 30 minutes or
whatever and come back afterwards and unlock it, and the shutter will close.
Ask for a locking cable release at your nearest camera store and you will
have what you want. They come in different lengths, but are usually about a
foot long or so, and that should be fine for what you want to do. They are
also reasonably cheap (5 dollars at a guess?).
on the OM-10 you can use the 'B' setting eregardless of whether you have a
manual adaptor. Most cameras with manual mode 'on board' have the 'B' setting
on the shutter speed dial instead (e.g. the Olympus OM-1, OM-2, OM-4Ti, C*non
A-1 and loads more).
Good luck with the star trails!
Dave Bellamy.
