Following up on my saying it is: actually it makes sense to me when you
think how close you are to the subject matter with a wide angle lens.
I'm an ice rink length away with a 1000mm, but maybe a foot away from
the same subject (same size on film) when I use a 24mm. Move the front
of the 1000mm lens the same tiny distance as a 24mm (to simulate a
jarring) and it'll produce the same effect.
