The Tamron 28-80 was mentioned, but another one to think about would be the 
SP 35-80 f/2.8-3.8. It uses 62 mm filters and has the brighter aperture. 
They're on eBay frequently. Also, the Tokina AT-X 28-85 f/3.5-4.5. Not as 
common as the Tamrons, but a great lens.
