And I'd always thought that the "diaphragm" referred to the mechanical
device made up of the shutter blades, while "aperture" is the opening
expressed in f-stops. Just looked it up in my American Heritage Dictionary:
"1. Anatomy: a muscular membranous partition.... 2. Any similar membranous
part that divides.... 3. A thin disk.... 5. Optics. A disk having a fixed
or variable opening...."
