A possible solution to Peter's problem might be
the Bogen (Manfrotto) #3420 TELEPHOTO LENS
SUPPORT. Adjustable to fit many lenses, it mounts to
camera with the small (#3157N) rectangular QR plate
and supports the lens independent of the collar. Not
as classy as some of the RRS, but lots less $.
