That is not correct. At the bottom and on the right of my FedEx Express USA
Airbill paperwork there is the last optional it number 8 which reads:
Release Signature Sign to authorize deliver without obtaining
signature
By signing you authorize us to deliver this shipment without
obtaining a signature
and agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any resulting claims.
Now FedEx may or may not have different rules for its ground service, I
don't know. And individual carriers out there might be renegade if no one's
brought them to task for prior transgressions, but that company's policy is
not to leave packages unattended without a signature.
I'm sure Mike M. can fill us in on the details.

Came home tonight, excited about getting my box from Hunt's camera. Hmm.
No FedEx box on the porch. That's odd. No note even.
Checked the website. Says delivered to front door.
Uh oh.
Called them. Seems they have no way of telling me the address to which the
package was sent. What? Why not.
"We'll have to talk to the driver tomorrow".
That's it? You left a $2500 package without a signature and you don't know
where?
"Yes, sir".
I'd switch to UPS, but my UPS package WAS on my porch. Luckily well packed,
since it was literally CRUSHED.
I'll tell ya, it's USPS for me.
Wait, no. They seem to have lost a 35-70/3.5-4.5.
What's a guy to do?
