MD badges have to be identified each time one of you orders one of my
leather sets. I should have polled serial #'s to be able to answer this
question, but here are my impressions:
OM-1's:
1) The earliest "MD" designation was a sticker on the top plate of
OM-1's.
2) After that the "square" MD badge is added to the front of the OM-1.
(The "square" badge fills a hole in the leatherette that is square--not
to be confused with the "rectangle" MD badge that has a ribbed metal
area, outboard right and left, that creates a hole in the leatherette
that is wider than it is tall.)
3) Sometime prior to the introduction of the OM-1n, the aforementioned
"rectangle" MD badge appears, but only on one camera I've seen. All
OM-1n's should have the "rectangle" badge.
OM-2's:
1) The first OM-2's had no MD badge anywhere, even though they had a
wind/motor port. (Interestingly, I think they were being made
concurrently with the "square"-badged OM-1's.)
2) Next, the OM-2's were fitted with the "square" badge.
3) I don't know when or if the "rectangle" badge appeared on the OM-2.
It's posible it was added when Olympus brought out the OM-2n. For that
matter this may be true for the OM-1/1n, and the above-mentioned OM-1
had a switched top plate. All the 2n's I've made covers for have the
rectangle badge. (The answer to this OM-trivia can be had if all of you
check your plain "1" and "2" bodies for a rectangle badge. While you're
at it, I'll cue up the music for "Final Joepardy")
The reason Olympus went to the rectangle, I think, was to allow for
other, wider badges. I think at least one was placed on cameras
marketed in Europe.
