No-one else replied (yet) so here's my 2-penn'orth:
Bad news IF you're unlucky with your postman...
- VAT theoretically always for new purchases
- they decide if it's new, saying "it's used" won't necessarily convince
them
- not sure of legal situation with really used stuff
- but frequently VAT isn't collected, especially if the package is 'small'
- duty likewise
- a few percent (about 5?)
- to be paid to the delivery person (or at their office which could be at the
airport)
- plus they can/do charge for their customs-clearing services (ouch!)
- they make their own valuation
- they may take into account your documentation.
This is my experience in France and Belgium which should be similar to UK.
Good luck,
Jez

1. Does Value Added Tax (VAT) have to be paid, always, sometimes, never?
2. What is the typical level of import duty?
3. When do these have to be paid (on receipt)?
4. Does the sender have to make the valuation for import duty purposes?
Any advice would be most appreciated, on or off list to <dbellamy2k@xxxxxxx>.
Thanks.
Dave Bellamy.
