Joel -- I was considering the Acer Scanwit 2740S, which includes the ICE
capability. However, although it is a lower cost, it is also lower
resolution. I don't anticipate ever needing to scan larger than 35mm
format,
but how would you evaluate the tradeoff in resolution v/s the ICE
capability? If the SS4000 is available at about $700 the cost difference is
only about $200 for the higher resolution. I anticipate that most of my
scanning will be for eventual output in high-quality inkjet printouts of up
to about 8x10, or possibly 11x14 if I buy a larger printer.
Jim,
The tradeoff is an apples and oranges thing. If you need the resolution, ICE
will simply never make up the difference. More significant may be the
SS4000's ability to pull detail out of shadows. I simply don't shoot print
film anymore because I can get all the detail I want off the slides.
I've never used ICE. David Hemingway of Polaroid says that one can get
80-900f the value of ICE with the software. Personally, I'm just not
interested in dust and scratch removal because I keep my slides clean and I
don't wish to compromise the sharpness of my scans. If I have the odd
problem with a slide, I just fix it with Photoshop. I don't have any
problem going through my scans pixel by pixel. It's my art. If I were doing
it for other people 9 to 5, I might feel differently about it.
