There's no "best" focal length for a portrait lens. The "traditional"
head/shoulders lens FL is from ~80-110mm. But I've used 135, 180/200, and
300's as good portrait lenses. I especially like the 135/2.8, as it
presents a good out-of-focus background wide open. I also remember using
the 180/2.8 wide open many times too when I owned one.
Many professional fashion photographers use 300/2.8's wide open.
