You are right about the AE-1; it was the big seller at the time of the OM-1's
introduction. Its additional bulk helped make the OM-1 seem amazingly small by
comparison. The Pentax ME and MX followed shotly after as a pair; the ME was all
electronic, more of a point-and-shoot SLR. The MX was a real competitor,
offering pretty much the same features as the OM-1 (including a cloth FP shutter
as far as I recall), with a size slightly smaller than the OM-1, and the common
K-mount lens mount. It also had a very popular 40mm pancake lens available...

I don't know exact years of production, but I had once heard or read
that the Canon AE-1 & AE-1P were the most popular and highest production
SLR's ever. Has anyone else ever heard of this? I don't really think the
AE-1 compares to the OM-1 in size or features, but I do believe they
were from about the same time period.
