What's with the sellers of photo equipment on eBay anyway? The following
rant isn't directed at Gary, Tom or any other List members that sell on
eBay but I'm beginning to think I've got a dark cloud hanging over my
head. I collect old wood working tools and have completed many, many
transactions for tools on eBay with very few problems. That's in quite a
contrast to my experiences with photo equipment. For example - my last
four buys:
T20 flash - Picture shows flash with a case. Description says a case is
included. Flash received without case.
35-70mm lens - Lens described as being in excellent condition. Received
with 1" long crack in filter ring. Now that I know where to look I can
barely make out the crack in one photo in the auction listing.
OM-1n camera - Described as a black body, like new but with no picture. I
sent Email and asked lots of questions about cosmetic and working
condition. Was assured that it was like new except for a few tiny
scratches on bottom plate. What I got was a chrome, not black, camera with
a light meter that's at least two stops off.
Weston Master V meter - Described as in excellent working condition as well
as appearance, will prove to last a lifetime. Actually, using the sunny 16
rule at 100ASA, the meter shows a shutter speed of 1/20 second instead of
1/100th. Worse, the readings between the high and low scales don't jive.
Back when I was buying lots of wwing tools I really looked forward to a
package arriving at the door. Now I have a sense of dread wondering what's
going to be wrong this time. What's this all about? Am I just on a run of
bad luck or is this typical of eBay photo purchases?
Anyway, I'd like to state again that this rant isn't directed at any of our
List members. I don't believe that any of them were involved in these
transactions and I'm sure that they operate with the highest of ethics.
Thanks for listening - if you did. ;-)
Later,
Johnny
