I wonder about this. The converter has a diode in it that regulates the
voltage from 1.5 to 1.35 volts. Surely this diode would also provide
somewhat of a stabilisation function that would manage the non-linear
voltage drop over time of the alkaline batteries? The camera won't know
or care what bettery is being used any more, since the battery isn't
powering the camera: the miniature "power supply" is.
