Isn't is sickening how people will take advantage of hospitality like
that... of course, given the same situation, I would not have done
so. I would have stayed in my hotel room all evening so as to resist
temptation ;-).
Actually, I went to CFB Trenton with 2 Tornados while we were
detached for low flying to CFB Goose Bay (back in June 1992)). That
was a fun weekend, although not on a par with the Harrier boys' visit
to Edmonton I gather. That was the weekend that Archie, the Tornado
F3 display pilot, (I was on Tornado GR1) was a good boy all weekend
so as to make sure he was safe for his displays, then tied one on on
the final evening. He tried to jump the perimeter fence (to get to a
taxi he said later) and caught his wedding ring on the top of the
fence. He arrived on the other side without part of his finger (well
the bone was still there). The security policeman who was asked to
call an ambulance fainted (allegedly) when he saw the dripping damage.
Archie was flying again within 2 weeks as the Canadian surgeons gave
him 3 choices: wait 6 months for the full plastic surgery bit,
replacing the flesh; wait about 3 months for a partial restoration;
or let them cut it back, tidy it up and send him on his way. He went
for the latter.
Olympus content: I borrowed my wife's AF1 (Infinity) Twin for the
airshow at Trenton. While strapping in (forgive me if you have heard
this one) I left the camera on the canopy rail and did not remove it
before lowering the canopy. The canopy of about 500lbs rested
briefly on the camera before I realised my error. The camera was
unscathed... but I did not tell my wife for several years.

In point of fact they had two ladies (the event co-ordinators) ensuring
that they were wined and dined throughout Edmonton. On the day of the event
they were kept busy by "adoring" throngs who were getting their posters
and/or brochures signed by the pilots - S/L John Lawson & F/L Dave Thomas.
On the Saturday night they were the guests of honour at the "Top Gun Lokk a
Like " contest at the local "hot" spot. Needless to say they were the hit
of the crowd ( mostly adoring young things )!!
Their final comments on the day they left were that they "had never been
treated as well anywhere else" as by the Edmontonians.
The Sgt and his ground crew were unbelievable - supremely well organized (
ask them about Whyte Avenue sometime) and they too put on a great show for
the crowds of kids who got to sit in the cockpit (under very close
supervision of course). The boys did a "low and over" when they left. Tower
records show a landing gear check at 1000' and 200 kts - my photos show
about 100' and 450kts. Not one noise complaint though!!!
