Interesting problem here. I've been shooting most of my stuff lately with
my -1n, using 1-hour labs for processing/proofing.
A recent batch of prints came back with a faint red stripe on the prints,
running across the long dimension of the frame about 1/3 of the way up from
the bottom. Scanning the negs showed that this stripe was indeed on the
negatives. I immediately assumed that the fault was with the lab, with a
dirty transport roller abrading the film as it went through the processor.
Actually, I got 4 free rolls of film and an apology from the lab when I went
down to let them know that their processor needed cleaning. It also made me
swear to stop using the 1 hour labs for anything that was important to me.
Convenience is nice (the pro lab I use is across town) but it's moot if my
negs are ruined.
I took a roll of C-41 to the pro lab this weekend where they use a
dip-and-dunk processor, which ensures that nothing touches the film during
processing but the chemicals. Much to my chagrin, the faint red stripe was
on these negs as well! Arrgh! Evidently, the problem lies w/my -1n.
Does this sound like fogging due to a light leak in the body or a pressure
mark of some sort? I'm leaning towards fogging as the stripe is fainter or
non-existent in some frames and very evident in others (indicating how much
time the frame spent outside of the film canister) but can't quite figure
out how it would only be a stripe 1/3 of the way up from the bottom.
Battery/MD covers are all on.
Ideas would be appreciated!
