The wind mechanism under the top cover is either stripped (jammed then
forced) or the ratchet mech. is sluggish due to grease.

Subject: [OM] OM-1 winding problem
I bought an OM-1 recently to obtain the attached lens. The body has a
problem, however, and I want to see if any list member might know the
cause/solution. The wind lever moves freely and does not engage at all.
I pulled the bottom cover, the plastic battery container, and then the
take-up spool. I could not see anything obviously wrong. The metal
shaft that extends down from the wind lever was there, and turned when I
moved the lever, but did not seem to engage anything. I am able to wind
the camera using a Winder-1. I was afraid to delve any further into it
without first finding out more information. If anyone has any
suggestions or comments, I would greatly appreciate them. This may be a
job for Mr. Hermanson, though I basically got the camera for free, thus
my bravery in trying to look into it myself.
Thanks,
James Kiker
