I wanted to thank everyone who answered my macro questions several weeks
ago. That was a lot of really great advice and some very interesting
discussion about standoff, depth of field, magnification, and camera shake.
I've been kicking this around since. I've also acquired and read (and
reread, and reread) one of John Shaw's books (and will be getting some more
of his for sure). I've decided to begin with the 90mm macro (although not
Zuiko). Depending upon circumstances in the next month or two, I may also
try for a 50mm f2 Zuiko. (I got out sniped on one a few days ago in fact.)
My inititial lens of choice will be a used Tamron. I'm indifferent as to
whether it is version 1 (f2.5, 49mm filter), version 2 (f2.5, 55mm filter),
or the current version (f2.8, 55mm filter, 1:1 without tubes). If anyone
has one they are ready to sell, please let me know off list
(mikew@xxxxxxxxxx). I'm ready to pull the trigger on one on eBay tomorrow
(6/21), so time is a bit short. I definitely don't want one with dinged
threads and would prefer one that already comes with the Tamron lens hood.
The 1:1 Tamron extension/teleconverter would be a plus for the 2 older
models (although I do have a Vivitar 2x macro teleconverter on the way). If
anyone is of the trading persuasion, I just got back my 24mm f2.8 H. Zuiko
from CLA. I planned to run it by the list (along with a 50mm f1.2) soon
(before listing on eBay), but I'll mention that one now as trade bait (with
perhaps cash or other consideration on one side or the other).
Thanks again for the invaluable information I gleen from this mailing list,
not just in response to my own questions.
Mike Williamson
