I'll add #3 to this list:
3. Think "outside the box" and do not constrain yourself with ideas about
what the mainstream use (lens, film, lighting, etc.) for certain types of
subject material or under certain types of lighting conditions. Albert
Einstein stated it as thinking with the "mind of a child," unfettered by
observation, experience and the influence of others. Often it is the
highly unusual point-of-view, lighting, and/or perspective, if well
composed, that attracts attention and holds a viewer riveted to an image.
