I think it depends very strongly on what third party ink you buy. There are
a few black sheep out there who seem to use the same cheap standard ink, no
matter what brand and type of cartridge it is used to fill. I agree that it
is a very good idea to avoid these suppliers.
Others really analyze and copy the original ink for each printer
brand/model, and, for example, on both my Canon printers (BJ-200, BJC 620) I
have never had any problems with inks supplied by Boeder, Kores and, most
recently, Tigiton (sold by Renner Informatik in Germany), unless I tried to
refill the same cartridge more than 5 or 6 times. And there are a few other
suppliers out there that have an excellent reputation which they certainly
won't risk by selling inferior quality ink (think of Pelikan, Rotring,
etc.).
