Is there anybody out there on this list that is really
hip to solar heating and PV for residential
application?
I'm wanting to go off the deep end here, and do the
"green" thing with our house. I've got to redo our
roof and I might as well go solar while I'm at it.
Oly content: I'll photograph the project with my

Ken,
I have a friend in Southern California who did the solar hot water
heating thing about 15 years ago and advises everyone to stay away
from it. It resulted in many leaks in her roof. I suspect it had to
do with the weight load on a roof structure not designed for it. It
may have to do with loading up the roof in one area and not the
other, differential expansion due to solar heating expansion of the
the roof that is exposed pulling on the part that is shaded. You
have even more extremes in your area. After many roof repairs, she
took out the solar heating. If you go ahead, be sure to get a really
good contractor who is well experienced with this stuff. You may
also want to look into point source, no tank hot water heaters. You
may end saving as much or more with those over the long haul.
