Seems to ba a
lot of fungus around these days - wonder if it's the greenhouse effect ?
I pulled my OM stuff out of the closet a couple of weeks ago and dusted it
off. It had been stored away in a dry closet for several years and when I
was cleaning the 50mm, f1.8 I noticed a couple of black specks on the rear
of the front element. The largest is about the size of a couple of grains
of pepper and the other is considerably smaller. Might this be the
infamous fungus that I'm reading so much about?
Anyway, I ran a 12 exposure roll of film through both the OM-10 and OM-2n
to be sure that there weren't any light leaks and that the exposures were
in the ball park. Included in the bunch were several shots of a blank wall
with the 50mm and can't see any effects from the specks in the prints so I
guess I should leave well enough alone right now and not worry about it but
- those specks are bugging the heck out of me - you know what I mean? It
just doesn't seem right for an otherwise mint lens to have specks in it! ;-)
I learned from this List a few days ago that it's not practical to have a
lens of this type cleaned since that would cost considerably more than
buying a replacement. But, how practical is it to clean the rear of a
front element yourself? If I could purchase the required tools for $25-$30
I'd come out about even cost wise (I think my wife already has a supply of
the Pond's cold cream) and I'd have the tools in case I needed them in the
future. This is a "Japan" MC lens and it has a couple of small slots in
the front ring. Does it come apart with a spanner wrench? Any other
special tools required?
Thanks,
Johnny
