I'm weighing in late here, I know, but just a couple
random thoughts:
One of the things that so impressed me about the
Tokina AT-X 35-70/2.8 was the nearly complete lack of
distortion at ANY focal length. Sure there is a
little pincushon here or there, but compared to the
much ballyhooed 35-80/2.8 it is next to perfect.
Joel's test comparing the 35-80 with the 35/shift
matched my experience with that lens too. Once you
have used a lens that has such controlled distortion
as the shift lens does, others pale by comparison.
I've owned a few lenses through the years but never
kept any lens that had such marked distortion. I may
use a lens for general photography purposes 900f the
time, but the remaining 10 0s where the equipment
gets pushed to the limits. If a lens is not usable
where I need to to be usable, what good is it?
