This is a very industrial area, so most of the view are factories. Quite
different topography than California. One thing Ohio, Michigan and Ontario
will have plenty of - Mosquitoes. You can photograph these insects on your
own skin (Good luck!).
Actually, Perrysburg has some excellent really old homes, etc. on the
Maumee River. There is nothing south/west/east of Toledo except corn fields
and more corn fields. Very, very boring. In Toledo, the zoo is excellent,
very underrated on the national scene. There is also some city parks worth
visiting, "Wildwood", where the Champion Spark Plug founder's mansion
resides and there is a park (same park system) in or near Perrysburg. The
City of Toledo has a lake freighter (the "Willie B") docked as a tourist
exhibit (Toledo though it would be a great tourist trap, I don't think
so.). One of the top 5 amusements parks in the world, Cedar Point, is in
Sandusky, OH (~2 hrs. east of Toledo). From East Toledo you can photograph
the Downtown Toledo skyline.
In Detroit, there is some new architecture, but downtown is pretty worn
down (But from a photo point of view, this may be pretty cool). Tiger
Stadium (Baseball) is cool and the newer Chrysler Building in Auburn Hills
won some awards. You can go to the top of the Renaisance Center building
and photograph across the city and into Windsor, Ontario. Great view. Belle
Isle is an island on the Detroit River worth visiting, including a maritime
museum housing some of the old hydroplane ("Miss Pepsi", etc.) racers.
Henry Ford museum sold most of their collection to stay open (not the same
as it use to be). Lots of river traffic worth seeing, especially the yachts
that come out on the weekends. The Ford Mansion and estate in Grosse Pointe
is open to the public and also worth a peek. Detroit Zoo has also been
renovated. University of Michigan Campus (Ann Arbor, MI) also is quite
photogenic. Distinct architecture.
Windsor is a great place and very clean (very small downtown area that has
gambling, etc.). The Canadiens have always been a great neighbor (except
when the Maple Leafs are winning). Great photos of Detroit from across the
river.
