I've got an XA2. Just sat down and played with it to confirm operation.

Subject: [OM] XA2 help needed!

<snip>

1. When I opened the case up, a small clip-shaped piece of metal fell out -
I have no idea where it went.

If you mean when you opened the sliding lens cover, this is likely your
reason for the problems in #2. The lens cover should "click" into place both
open and shut. I'd guess this is a "not difficult" fix if the small metal
piece isn't actually broken.

2. <snipped>.

3. I haven't put batteries in it yet, and am doing a quick physical check of
the camera. The film advance knob doesn't want to move. Does the film
advance need batteries, or is it jammed? The film take-up spool seems to
rotate freely.

The shutter is interlocked with the advance. If the shutter is wound and
cocked, the advance will not move until the shutter has been released. With
no batteries, the shutter won't release. Note also, the shutter is locked if
the lens cover is closed, so your problems with the lens cover may be
involved here as well.

4. The shutter release button appears pushed-in. Pictures I've seen of an XA
make it appear that the shutter release should be flush with the rim
surrounding it. Also, with mine, when pushing the shutter release, there's
no click, no apparent travel at all. Is this battery-dependent?

The shutter on my XA2 sits about 1/2-1 mm below the little rim surrounding
it. The travel when tripping the shutter is miniscule, and it's what I'd
refer to as a "soft-touch" shutter. There's no tactile "click" in the
shutter button itself.

<some snippage> I'm wondering if I might be better off waiting
for an XA - I think being able to set the aperture and see the shutter speed
in the display might be a nice feature.

The XA definitely has more features, but the XA2 is 'quicker' to use, since
there's almost nothing to set.

Thanks,
