Never resave a JPG! You should always work in a lossless format like
uncompressed TIFF, making any corrections and resizing to that file and then
save once and only once to JPG. JPG is a lossy format. Each time you open a
JPG, modify it and resave, you are losing image information. To create a
smaller JPG of an image at any given resolution, dimensions, and bit depth,
you will have to increase the lossy compression level (if your software allows
it). Your other choice is to use a lower resolution expressed in pixels/inch.
For the WEB 72 pixels/inch is standard. Although the expression of pixels/inch
is somewhat invalid when viewing an image on a monitor...I find you can
resample an image in PS to ~1024x768 and save using "medium" compression and
produce a file of 70-80KB. Here's such an image I recently processed in this
way:

Thanks for your advice. I'm a novice at this and am trying to figure out
how to take my original jpgs (at about 300 kb) and reduce the size to the
100 kb you recommend.
