-Hi roger,
I would recommend a 500/8 Beroflex ( Normal,non mirror , -called
"Wundertuete" here, untranslatable) for this purpose. I got some very
pleasing results with one of those at the 1999 eclipse here in germany ( No
totality pics though, sigh...). This lens is extremely light, a decent
performer even with a 2x converter. You can unscrew the back part for
transport ( at the place where the tripod mount sits) and -- not
unimportant- it should be really cheap. 1 paid 149 DM ( ~ 70 $) for mine a
few years ago, but saw many of these go for less than 50$ on ebay. I have
even used it as an amazingly sharp teleskope up to 140x magnification.
You are going to Zambia--- I bought too much oly gear recently to afford
the journey - so please put some nice pics on the web for me---
Best wishes

Morning all,
I bought a Vivitar 400mm f/5.6 the other weekend. I christened it 'The
Beast', as it is colossal and very heavy. Seeems OK from an optics
point of view (I've had some nice moon shots from it), but as I want to
take it to Zambia for the solar eclipse, I'd rather have something
lighter.....
Cheers,
Roger
