Fellow Zuiks,
I spend a great deal of time in the Botanical Garden in Balboa Park here in
San Diego. I enjoy photographing the flowers and it is a great venue to try
out various lenses, etc.
I have been shooting an 85/2 and will put up some shots for viewing in a few
days. I recently acquired a 50/3.5 Macro and will likewise put some shots
from it up for crituque. The 85/2 is, as we all know, an awsome lens. I am
sure I will love the 50/3.5 as well.
Now the point, many tourists are in the Garden carrying everything from
single use throw aways to very elaborate N....n and C...n wonder bricks.
Last Friday while shooting I noticed a Japanese tourist with a HUGE camera.
I mean this thing was a monster with a very large lens on it. He had small
hands and it was a real handful. He was taking photos of the flowers and was
using a tripod. We made eye contact and I asked to look through the
viewfinder to see what the shot he was working would look like. The Camera
was a newer Nikon with a medium range macro zoom. Probably about $3000
worth. The shot of the flower filled the frame.
I had my OM-2 and 50/3.5 macro slung from a neck strap. It is tiny in
comparison! My shot likewise filled the frame. I had to use my body to
"zoom", so he had me there. But I was once again reminded why I like the OM
system. The flower in question is a deep red. The photo with the OM-2,
50/3.5 is deeply saturated, sharp and I don't have back pain. I can get the
OM-2 repaired if need be by one of several competent persons.
Not until they pry it from my cold, dead hands ....
