Try shooting some Kodachrome 64 and compare sharpness with Provia
100F. The rms diffuse granularity numbers are only part of it. Emulsion
thickness also affects sharpness. Unlike E-6 films, Kodachrome emulsions
do not contain the dye couplers; they are added during K-14
processing. This allows the emulsions to be much thinner. The very low
rms diffuse granularity (nearly as low as Provia 100F) and much thinner
emulsions are why Kodachrome 25 and 64 have reputations for extremely high
apparent sharpness when projected and printed. Also one of the reasons
Kodachrome 200 gets away with rms diffuse granularity numbers comparable to
more modern ISO 400 film emulsions and still holds its own as a moderately
fast film.
I'm aware of all that. I was simply discussing granulity, nothing more.
Michael Freeman, the photography writer, pointed out years ago that film
sharpness is a subjective quality which is based primarily on four objective
qualities: acutance, contrast, granularity & resolution.
