All this talk about mercury vapour reminded me of a demonstration I saw
many years ago. If you put some mercury between a mercury vapour lamp
and a wall, you'll see the shadow of the vapour on the wall. Mercury's
so extraordinarily dense that the vapour sits in a layer just a couple
of centimetres thick on top of the liquid. Fascinating stuff - I
remember in school the teacher getting out a pot of mercury and saying
'we're not really allowed to do this but it's such fun I can't resist',
and then pouring out blobs to play with.
I expect I'll be sueing him in about 20 years time.
