Michael,
Hopefully Mike Veglia will jump in on this thread as he is the expert. It's
been years since I've done any racing photography. Amazingly, my first
experience was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a Polariod SX-70!
I don't know how close you'll be, but I suspect you'll need length in the
lens. Your challenge may be your gap between 150 and 500. If I'd known
earlier I would have loaned you something. That said, I think you'll need
the 75-150 and the 500. Remember the key to racing photography is panning.
Slow and smooth. Follow the car. I actually stopped a number of cars with
the Polaroid.
If it was me, I'd thrown the 35-80, the 75-150 and the 500 in my kit. That
would give you a good all-around kit with pretty light weight. If you have
one, bring a winder, as it's very useful. I would think a monopod would
actually be a disadvantage, as panning would be harder.
Just my two cents, discounted.
