I started my son on OM's when he was 10, with the OM-1 and a 50mm f1.8.
Initially I just had him use the "sunny 16" rule and center the needle for
shutter speed, and focus. That seemed to keep him occupied for a couple of
months. Also, I took him places on the weekend to sustain interest, finding
that he wasn't too keen on just taking pictures around the house.
He lost interest for a while at 11, but at age 12 came back with a vengeance
and wanted to know everything. I remember taking him to a huge waterfall
nearby for his depth-of-field lesson. He was still a bit overwhelmed by the
technical details and would often steal my Om2 to use as he loved the "auto"
setting. We now have approximately 20,000 pictures of our three Shitzu's and
our two cats in the family albums..
For two years I have had the Olympus 450Z digital, and he (now 17) has become
really proficient with it, utilizing exposure compensation quite easily. So,
I guess it was not for nuttin'. But his interest in the OM-1 has waned for
now. I do find that when we take trips and I haul out all my gear it somewhat
revives his enthusiasm. I almost dread the day when he snaps into
Zuikoholicism and wants the OM-1 for keeps! After 26 years with the OM-1 and
24 with my OM-2, I'd rather he took the OM-4!
What are we unleashing upon our youth?? :=)
