Whoops.
"Circular" - all modes, all cameras, but $$$
"Linear" (ordinary) polariser is good for 2s, 3x, 4x, in auto mode
only. Not spot or manual.
The problem is that the mirror has a semi-silvered spot that
polarises the light going down to the TTL meter.
When you cross two (linear) polarisers, all the light is cut out.
So the meter doesn't register right in manual or spot mode.
In auto mode, the mirror doesn't figure since it bounces out of the
way.
"Circular" polarisers actually consist of two layers. The outer one
is a linear polariser. The inner one (closest to the lens)
depolarises the polarised light that the first layer provides.
So the light going thru the mirror will be the same as that hitting
the film.
