It could be the teleconverter-
I have two Vivitar converters, one just says MC, the other is the matched
multiplier. The bokeh from the matched multiplier looks like a prism broke the
image into three copies, each pretty sharp. The MC multiplier gives more of a
soft focus "halo" effect. If there's an outpouring of interest, I'll scan them
and put them up somewhere.
