Yeah, this is always in the back of my mind of course.
However I think this chain of stores (Cash Converters) tends to be a little
bit more reputable (for a pawn shop at least) than most. I do know they
check
the list of stolen goods when an item is presented, and I've even been there
when
the police arrived to invite a young gentleman back to the station to
discuss some
items in his possesion.
I'll do a search on the archives and see if I can find any posting like you
describe.
On another note, they had the 50/3.5 mint for $70 Aus while next to it they
had
a 50/1.8 in OK condition for $90 Aus. I don't think they really had much
idea on values.
