The other thing that happens is the pop rivet that hold the contacts and
touch the cells get loose as the plastic creeps with age. You can try
carefully crimping these closed a bit with vice grips and some metal spacers
or if your soldering skills are good solder them to the metal. This requires
very good scraping of the plated surfaces nearby and care not to melt the
plastic.
The sliding spring contacts on the power switch also get corroded from
battery leaks/fumes(?) and can be cleaned from the back (base must be
removed). They often seem to be corroded even when there are no signs of
battery leaks.
