[OM] Smoking Power Bounce Grip 2

I just bought a Power Bounce Grip 2 including a T32 and 60 cm coiled TTL
cord at about $75 (175 HFL). I wanted this set for the grip and planned to
sell the T32. When I loaded it with new fresh C-cells I foud there was a
problem: The grip (the batteries within) started to get warm and things
started to smell toasted. The recycling time wasn't shortened by the grip as
well ....

Am I doing something wrong?
Is this a known problem?
Can I fix it myself?
