I've had a similar(?) problem. The lens was fine for months then one day the
focusing ring became somewhat "detached" from the focusing mechanism - it felt
loose and would not focus the lens. A bit of wriggling and it somehow synched
back in and was OK for a few moments, then it slipped out again etc.
I tightened the set screws under the rubber focusing ring and have had no
problems since, although I'm a bit mystified as to how this fault occurs.
