My father-in-law does genuine silver "silvering" and I am fairly sure he
would be glad to do it for less than $400 but.... You would have to clean off
the glass first and get it really clean and you would have to mask off the
areas with tape or wax or someting where you did not want silver, quite a bit
of work. Doing silvering over only a portion without cleaning would probably
leave edge marks.
Since you can buy a dead OM10 for about $20-30 and pull off the prism, it is
just not worth it. John Hermanson mentioned previously that the OM10 has the
same prism as on the OM1. He also mentioned that it is not trivial to do the
prism alignment which uses shims and really requires a collimator to do
properly. So your best bet would be to get an old OM10, strip the prism and
send it with the OM1 to a qualified tech to install, still probably a lot
less than $400!
Alternately just remove the rotting foam to stop further damage and clean off
the blackened section well. The prism should work with no silvering , but not
as efficiently, so you get a darker section but still better than foam rot
blackened silver debris.
