Turning most (if not all) Olympus flashes "off" automatically discharges
the main capicitor anyway. Capicitor failure seems to have been a
notable problem on early strobe units (circa Honeywell) -- it hasn't
been a great concern for many years. Instruction books from that era
commonly warned users of the necessity of "forming" the capicitor by
charging and firing the flash several times before use for accurate
operation -- no more.
Interesting.
Two brand new Vivitar 283s I bought last year came with instruction
booklets that, indeed, still instructed the user to form the capacitor and
store the flashes in a charged state. Old technology?
