Here is the EETimes news item on the kodak/Olympus tech cross license:
>> (EE times March 5, 2001)
The companies said they will use their agreement to reinforce Internet-based
digital imaging services. Kodak will provide Olympus its technologies related
to color management and digital imaging over a network, which are already
used for its Print@Kodak photo finishing service and Kodak PhotoNet Online.
Kodak is now aggressively licensing its digital camera technologies to other
companies, and is currently negotiating with other digital camera
manufacturers.
Olympus in October became the first manufacturer to introduce a 4-megapixel
digital camera. Olympus engineers designed the camera's CCD, but its
manufacturing is done by an outside party. Under their agreement, Kodak will
supply high-resolution CCDs to Olympus and Olympus will supply lenses to
Kodak.
The cross-licensing agreement could grow into an OEM relationship whereby
Olympus would supply digital still cameras to Kodak. "Even now, we are
purchasing low-end cameras from Sharp and other companies," said a spokesman
of Eastman Kodak Japan Ltd. "It is probable for Olympus to be our OEM
supplier in the future."
