G'day all,
Surely these days with large amounts of budget directed towards R&D for
digital photography (and remembering that Olympus is pretty much a leader
in that field anyway) the company just hasn't the resources to develop any
improvements on products based on a twenty five year old design.
I saw a OM-2000 for the first time on the weekend and quite frankly was
less than enthusiastic. But when I retired the company presented me with an
Oly P&S (Infinity Stylus Epic) which really is a beaut little camera. So I
guess that this and the digital area is where the manufacturer is heading.
John.

It's possible, but I recall bits of another recent interview in which
Mr. Maitani was expressing some frustration at not being able to proceed
with an OM-5. My fading recollection is that it was on the drawing
boards, and he lost the good fight. I hope he's enjoying the fabled
Japanese respect he deserves, but by all the signs I'd say they showed
him the bottom line. He's undoubtedly a realist and a gentleman, and
maybe they keep him focused on the notion that an OM-5 is still in the
cards. (Just as soon as the E30 brings 'em to their knees.)
Sidebar: I wonder if a statement by Maitani about the OM2000 was ever
recorded. There's a lovely token of respect. I find the camera useful,
but I suspect he might not be a big fan. <g>
