between the last two paragraphs of "OM System Inside Story -
Interview with Y. Maitani (part 3 of 3)". This is Maitani's own
words summarizing his policy. This may help you understand why
Olympus was always unique and why they are not interested to become
another Canon or Nikon.

(snip) In the actual design process, systematizing the camera had
priority over minimizing its size.
"Effort of lots of people and a considerable amount of money is
spent to develop a product. Such a product is, so to say, a
property of all human beings. It's wasteful to make 'another thing
alike'. If we're going to make something, let's make something
never existed before." Together with this Maitani's policy, the
unique but steady concept of the OM system is certainly inherited
today.

At the end of the interview, we asked Maitani about the "OM-5".

BTW, in the book there is a picture of a scratchy OM-4 with
Maitani's autograph in the memo holder (looks great!). Seems that
Maitani spells his own name as "Maitany".
