Any info would be great.
Ben:
All you have to worry about is long-term storage with a relatively big lens
attached *and* no support for the lens (i.e., the lens is simply suspended
in space, without touching anything or resting an edge anywhere). This is
rare. If this is the case, long storage like this could conceivably warp
the lens-mount a fraction of a millimetre, which would be enough to cause
some problems.
Of more concern is the "proper camera bag." These bags often act as a
magnet for humidity, which, over the medium term, can cause fungus growth
in your glass. I only use bags for storage of non-glass items (no lenses
or filters). Of course, whenever I carry the cameras around I put 'em in
the bag(s).
As for the camera taking up too much space, do what the rest of us do:
either shoe-horn other stuff into the crevices left unfilled by the camera,
or buy a bigger bag. ;-)
