There were two flag raisings on Mt Suribachi. Both were photographed
and the photograph still exists, however it was the second raising that
is the famous one. The first flag was to be replaced with a larger flag
that would be easier to see. As the larger flag was on a very heavy
pole several men helped to raise it and as it was being raised it was
both photographed with a still camera and motion picture camera, this
raising was not staged. When asked if the photograph had been staged
the photographer said "sure". He thought he was being asked about a
second picture he took of all the Marines gathered together in front of
the flag. There was a very good presentation of this on the History
Channels show on the Iwo Jima battle.
Most of the Marines were killed or wounded in the battle.
