P.S. But, if you *insist* on visiting Yankeeland, you can't beat the drive

be beat!
I will second this. The "PCH" is California Highway 1 which merges with
and splits from U.S. Highway 101 in various places. Very scenic, but don't
let a map deceive you. It's a very winding road in places, particularly
where it's not part of U.S. 101 and goes through small towns not shown on
larger maps. Allow plenty of time to travel it and enjoy the sights. IMO,
it has much more interesting sights packed closer together than traveling
U.S. 101 or Interstate 5 along their entirety, if you have the time. Not
that there isn't anything interesting around them . . . it's spaced farther
apart. You might take one north and the other south.
The Pacific Ocean moderates the climate along it compared to farther
inland; it may be very cool with higher humidity, but it won't be
deep-freeze frigid. Remember to protect your gear and wipe it down
afterward if you do any shooting around the ocean.
