Good lord! That's quite an itinerary. And I suppose you'll be wanting to
eat and sleep too. How much time do you have? This is not like motoring
from London to Sheffield you know. :-) Personally, this time of year I'd
recommend a sort of southern CA drive: straight east to Joshua Tree, then
north to Death Valley and over through Vegas (only because it's really the
only way to get there) over to the Hoover Dam and N. Arizona (the Grand C.
and so many other delights). If you want to stop and see Vegas, be my
guest. I suppose it's worth seeing once. YMMV

You could get cold and you could get hot. Prepare for either, but it won't
get really really hot. Early mornings on the desert can be frigid this time
of year. If you're a first-light sort of guy, take note.

Oh yes, although throughout the day many many opportunities for WA's mean
that handheld stuff is very feasible.

You might try to get over to Chinle and Monument Valley in NE Arizona. Page
AZ in the center offers the famous S and N Antelope slot canyons, and there
are many other slot canyons in Utah just to the north. If you head back to
LA through Phoenix with enough time stop at Organ Pipe Cactus Nat'l
Monument, where it will be a little warmer at night and you can shoot
saguaros and organ pipe cacti. I have a few photos from a similar trip a
couple years ago at http://members.tripod.com/jdubikins, which needs
updating badly, but I offer them for inspiration -- as if you needed any!

Have a great trip!
