In reply to Mike Williamson:
Okay, here it is: Why can't the negatives be copied to CDs?
Sure they can be "copied" to the cd. To digitize them you have to get
information from them, which is a scan.
on the CD. Just copy it out there with no adjustments.
You can scan a neg or slide or whatever with "no adjustments" using default
settings and mess with it later in Photoshop if that's what you want to do.
The idea of the messing with it on the front end (during the scan) is that
you have the opportunity to create the optimal data set to work from. You
will never get any more information than what that initial scan gives you,
so it better be good.
Maybe allowances
would have to be made for variations in negative density,
Uhh huh...that's what takes time doing the scan.
Now I don't need a fancy schmancy
(shmancy?) film scanner. I can take the pristine negative image into my
favorite image program and go from there.
It won't be "pristine" if you copied/scanned the neg with limited (cheap)
equipment. You gets what you pay for here. It will only have what the
equipment sensitivity will permit, and nothing more.
Okay, what am I missing here?
A digital OM camera ;-)
